1. SirCam Virus - a worm with an attitude

The SirCam virus has been doing the rounds, in overdrive. This particularly nasty virus is a worm, and replicates by sending itself to everyone in your address book. Under certain conditions, it can delete all the files in your Windows directory. What it will definitely do, and this is scary, is to append itself to a file in your "My Documents" folder. So, not only do you send everyone in your address book the virus, they also will get a copy of what could be sensitive information.

This particular virus will appear in your mailbox more often than not from what appears to be someone you know. The subject line will match the attachment name, but the message will read:

"Hi! How are you?
I send you this file in order to have your advice
See you later. Thanks"

The virus is activated by executing the attachment. This virus has been particularly virulent, and I have had at least 20 of these messages sent to me from many different parts of the world in the past week. Luckily, Zone Alarm has quarantined the attachment each time, and my other line of defense, an up to date virus scanner, has been excellent back-up. Is your virus scanner up to date? If not, read on:

2. Free antivirus software available for download

There's no doubt that while virus scanners are expensive, they are a definite necessity these days. If you are one of many people that is running a shareware, timed-out anti-virus program, this may be of assistance. Up until a couple of months ago, a good quality virus scanner called Innoculate (which utilises a VET engine) was available free of charge for download. It was the full version, no time-outs or cripples.

Downloads from the site have been discontinued, but I have a copy of it available for use. The scanner works well and I've tested it out on Windows 98 and ME. The great thing is that updates are still released for it, free of charge, every couple of days via an autoupdate option included with the program. Innoculate detected virii such as SirCam without a problem. If you would like a free copy, you can download it (approx. 3 meg) from our Australian mirror site, via the following link:
