Videos and Google SERPs

Posted by Michael Bloch in web marketing (Friday October 3, 2008 )

Either Google is experimenting again or they’ve introduced a new feature in relation to video inclusion in SERPs.. one that will affect everyone.

Up until the last couple of days, when videos were included in the SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages), they were an additional item. For example, if there were 2 videos on a page of results, there would still be 10 of the traditional listings.

Today when searching, I noticed that the videos are included on the listing count. So in the above example, there were only 8 “normal” listings.

This means that if you were listed at no.7 on a term before, you’d be on the front page; regardless of how many videos were also present. But now if there are 4 videos on a page, you’ll no longer be listed on page 1 of the results.

Google is known to trial new features on particular users at random from time to time, so maybe what I saw today isn’t being seen across the board; but if it is, it’s just made the battle for page 1 a lot more difficult. What’s next, Google News inclusions also going towards the general SERPs listing count? Ech.

Now, where’s my video camera…
