Yahoo utilizing Spamhaus SBL

Posted by Michael Bloch in web marketing (Thursday January 24, 2008 )

If you’ve been having trouble getting email through to Yahoo users recently; you might want to check Spamhaus to see if your mail server’s IP is listed as Yahoo is now using SpamHaus’s SBL to block connections from listed IP addresses.

The Spamhaus Block List (SBL) is a massive database of IP addresses of spam sources, including known spammers and services that support spammers. The database is updated 24/7 by Spamhaus Project team members around the world.

You can check if your mailserver’s IP is listed here:

(scroll down to the bottom of the page)

If you’re not sure what your mailserver IP is, it’s a set of numbers you can find in the header of emails you’ve sent in the Received: from line.. looks something like this:

Received: from ( [XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX])

where “x” is a number. To view an email header:

Microsoft Outlook

– right mouse button click over the email and select “Options”.

Microsoft Outlook Express

– highlight the email and then select “Properties” from the File menu. Then click “Details”, then “Message source”.

– open the email and on the menu bar, select View | Headers and choose “All”.

If you find your mailserver’ has been blocked and you’re on a shared hosting setup; contact your web host and let them know rather than try and remove the block yourself. One of the disadvantages of shared hosting can be if a spammer gets loose and then gets blocked, all mail for clients using that mail server to send to the service doing the blocking can be interrupted. If you remove that block and the spam issue hasn’t been addressed by the host, it will just be blocked again – and for longer.
