Facebook tops social bookmarking

Posted by Michael Bloch in web marketing (Wednesday September 3, 2008 )

It’s been a while since I last took a look at who’s doing what in the social bookmarking world – here’s some recent statistics.

Facebook is leading the pack according to AddThis. The following figures are based on activity during July 2008:

Facebook: 15.9%
Google: 15.5%
MySpace: 13.4%
Live: 8.8% 6.2%
Digg: 6.0%
MyWeb: 3.9%
Reddit: 3.7%
Furl: 2.5%
StumbleUpon: 2.3%
Other: 10.9%

It’s interesting to see slowly slipping away – it was the service that started the whole social bookmarking craze back in 2003. Wow, 5 years have passed??

I’d say AddThis statistics would be a fairly good representation given that they serve their bookmarking app over 30 billion times per month.

If you haven’t added social bookmarking features to your site yet, AddThis makes it really easy to – it’s free and just a matter of copying and pasting couple of lines of code. They’ve added some great new features in the last few months that allow further customization of the app – you can now use your own images for buttons and also set the order of how the bookmarking options display and also how many display in the popup.

It’s well worth the little bit of time to add the feature to your site – learn why in my article on social bookmarking.
