Testing your VoIP

Posted by Michael Bloch in web marketing (Tuesday July 25, 2006 )

This is an interesting little online application. I use VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) extensively these days for marketing purposes or for calling colleagues and clients.

Overall, the system I use works very well, especially given that it only cost me (more…)

New “digg this” linking method

Posted by Michael Bloch in web marketing (Wednesday July 19, 2006 )

Now that digg, the highly popular user driven social content website, has expanded beyond covering the topics of Technology and added new categories – Science, World & Business, Entertainment, Video, and Gaming; getting “Dugg” is becoming appealing to many more site owners.

What’s the attraction? (more…)

Grups and psychographics

Posted by Michael Bloch in web marketing (Saturday July 15, 2006 )

No, I’m not experimenting with hallucinogenic drugs tonight. I’ve been reading up a little more on a group of people that marketers are labelling Grups. Grup is short for “grown up”, but they are adults who haven’t really grown up in the traditional sense of the term – and I don’t mean that in a condescending way. (more…)

Marketing via MySpace

Posted by Michael Bloch in web marketing (Thursday July 13, 2006 )

MySpace has eclipsed Yahoo as the most popular single site, accounting for just under 4.5 percent of all U.S. Internet visits during the first week of July, according to HitWise.

It’s been interesting watching the MySpace member counter tick over since the time I signed up a few months ago. It’s been like watching slot machine reels spinning at times. So, the big question: Have I found having a MySpace profile beneficial? (more…)

Poison comments and karma

It has been unfortunately quite fashionable for bloggers, blog commenters and forum participants to unleash their fury in their writings; often using insults, obscenity and aggression to express an opinion. It may feel pretty good at the time to blow off some steam, but it can really come back to haunt the person. (more…)

Web hosting & search engine rank

Posted by Michael Bloch in web marketing (Monday July 10, 2006 )

I’ve been asked a couple of times recently by site owners located outside the USA whether it really makes a difference if you host your site with a local hosting company vs. utilizing a server/service based in the USA.

In my opinion, from an operational and customer service point of view, none at all – some of the best web hosts in the world are USA based and are often cheaper than their local counterparts; *but* when it comes to search engine rankings (more…)

Poor list hygiene = blacklisting

Posted by Michael Bloch in web marketing (Saturday July 8, 2006 )

When was the last time you removed email addresses that continually bounce from your lists?

An email list loaded with addresses that bounce isn’t just sloppy marketing that sucks up bandwidth and slows down your deliveries; it can have more drastic consequences. (more…)

Young entrepreneurs

Posted by Michael Bloch in web marketing (Friday July 7, 2006 )

Sometimes I start to feel a little bit jaded in my marketing and online business efforts – so many millions of banner ads viewed over the years, so many landing pages, so many products, so much writing.

It’s a bit like being a first time drug user graduating to a hard-core junkie – the buzz of the first hit gets harder to achieve; but you remember what it was like, so you keep trying to regain that feeling :) (more…)

The benefits of spam

Posted by Michael Bloch in web marketing (Thursday July 6, 2006 )

Believe it or not, there can be some benefits to be had from receiving spam; especially if you’re involved in affiliate marketing. Here’s why. (more…)

Keywords – the long tail

Posted by Michael Bloch in web marketing (Saturday July 1, 2006 )

I was looking at my traffic statistics for June earlier on and as always, I’m amazed at the number of different keyword combinations people have used in search engine queries which lead them to Taming the For the month of June 06, it was over (more…)
