Search engine marketer salary survey

Posted by Michael Bloch in web marketing (Wednesday November 25, 2009 )

A recent survey reveals the salaries of search engine marketers at various levels. It seems it’s still a good game to be involved in.

The Search Engine Marketing Professional Organization (SEMPO) surveyed over 600 in-house SEO professionals from the USA and Canada during the 2nd quarter of this year. Most respondents state they report to a Director or Vice President and 39% of respondents had 1-3 people reporting to them. Most who participated in the survey work for companies with less than 1,000 employees.

Key findings from the survey:

– Salaries have improved since the 2008 SEMPO in-house salary survey.

– The salary for an individual contributor with 1-3 years relevant experience range from USD $40,000 to $80,000

– A senior manager’s salary ranges $70,000 to $120,000

– Vice presidents looking after large SEM campaigns or a team of specialists make $160,000 to $250,000.

– Most survey respondents are working to improve ROI from search engine optimization (SEO) and pay-per-click (PPC) advertising campaigns – but within the same budgets. SEM budgets are mostly below $50K or above $250K with few in the in-between area.

– Search engine marketers are increasingly engaged in related activities such as organic search engine optimization, social media, email marketing, affiliate marketing and other forms of advertising campaigns.

SEMPO President Sara Holoubek believes that next year’s in-house salary survey will show further increases.

SEMPO is a global non-profit organization serving the search engine marketing industry; representing marketers in 40 countries and has a membership of over 800.
