Thinking local?

Posted by Michael Bloch in web marketing (Thursday September 13, 2007 )

With online local advertising spending set to nearly triple over the next 4 years and the term “local search” increasingly appearing in discussions, if your business caters to people in your immediate area and you haven’t delved into the topic as yet – it’s certainly time to do so.

My knowledge of local search is somewhat scant as the areas I work in tend to not be heavily geographically limited. It can be an aspect of some of my projects, but certainly not a focus.

Like many in the industry, I tend to concentrate the big search engines; but a plethora of local search engines and directories have popped up over the years and some do generate a lot of activity.

Probably the best known and longest established directory when it comes to people looking for goods and services locally is CraigsList – it’s not the prettiest of sites by any means, but it experiences incredible traffic levels. It currently provides local classifieds and forums for 450 cities worldwide; receives over 25 million visitors a month, generating 8 *billion* page views. Just goes to show – you can’t judge a book by its cover :).

A colleague of mine, Larry Sullivan, started getting into local search in a big way over the last couple of years and recently launched a very informative blog on the topic – LocalBizBits. Through the blog, you’ll learn about who the local search players are, how to optimize local listings, pay per click issues and a stack more.

Larry’s goal is to help small business understand local search and to provide easy to understand info on the subject for non technical folks. Larry also provides consultancy services if you need more of a helping hand. So take a trip out to LocalBizBits, subscribe to the blog via rss or email and Larry will keep you up to date with all the latest happenings in the local search industry!

By the way, if you do engage Larry’s services, let him know that I sent you. No, I don’t get a commission, but I might want to call in a consultancy favor one day ;)
