Increased Adsense display control

In addition to filtering out undesirable new advertising, the new feature also allows you to see all the advertisers currently targeting your site – great from a curiosity aspect. I’ve often wondered how many, if any, advertisers have hand selected my sites to run advertising.

AdSense already provides some filtering tools such as the competitive ad filter that enables you to block specific ads, such as competitors’ ads, from appearing on your pages and another feature so that only particular advertisers can run ads on your site; but the new feature, known as Ad Review Center will be a very welcome addition.

Ad Review Center will be rolled out over the next couple of months – you’ll know when it’s available for your account by the appearance of a green notification box at the top of your ‘Competitive Ad Filter’ page, located under the ‘AdSense Setup’ tab.

If you’re participating in Google AdSense, soon you’ll be able to have more control over what ads display.

While the AdSense program is great, sometimes ads that clash have been a bit of a problem. For example, on another site of mine I had published an article on the toxic nature of a type of product and you can guess what ads appeared next to it – blurbs from companies selling the item. Nobody wins in that situation :).

While more savvy users understand that often the site owner doesn’t have control of the ads, the situation did spur a few emails to me questioning why I was basically condemning a product, yet advertising it :). Google Adsense has evolved to a point where this type of thing doesn’t occur as often, but it certainly still happens from time to time.

This new feature from Google won’t cover all ads, just those that are placement targeted; i.e. where advertisers have chosen your site specifically for ads to appear on. You’ll be able to leave the feature set at “auto-approve” or choose to manually review all advertisers first.
