29% of holiday purchasing online

Anyway, for what it’s worth, you can view what I have to say about Xmas marketing here – yes, it’s the same article I’ve pulled out once a year since 2002, changed a little and then republished – it may contain some points about promotions during the festive season you may not have considered.

A recent survey report based on the responses of over seven and a half thousand consumers shows that nearly 29% of all holiday season shopping will be done online. Do I hear booyah!?

The NRF 2006 Holiday Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey conducted by BIGresearch from October 4-11 also states that just over 47% of respondents plan to purchase at least one item during their holiday shopping this year, which represents close to a 33% increase over three years ago.

Search of course will play a major part in online shopping, with many people researching online to purchase offline.

Other key findings from the survey:

– 88.7% research products on the Internet before buying in a store.

– Google is the most popular research tool followed by Yahoo, Amazon and eBay respectively

– The average holiday spend this year in total will be $791.10

– 23% plan to spend zero online in holiday shopping

– .9% will shop online for all of their holiday gift buying

– Over the 90 day period prior to when the survey was carried out, the most popular research items were:

Electronics 39.3%
Apparel 20.0%
Appliances 19.6%
Home Improvement Items 18.0%
Medicines?/Vitamins/Supplements 16.2%
Shoes 16.1%

Shoes? Wow, that’s interesting. I seriously can’t remember the last time I researched shoes on the web. I don’t think I ever have (looks down at his bare feet).
