Coming soon – Google TV

Posted by Michael Bloch in web development (Saturday May 22, 2010 )

Google recently announced Google TV; an open platform that it says “will bring together the best of TV and the best of the web to deliver the premier entertainment experience for the living room”.

Google TV will be built on Android and run the Google Chrome web browser.

Unlike other attempts to marry TV sets and the web, Google TV allows access to all web sites, turning what was often referred to as an “idiot box” into a truly interactive device.

Google TV will only be available pre-installed on Sony TVs and blu-ray players, as well as Logitech companion boxes.

The browser to be used for Google TV is just the Linux version of Google Chrome, slightly modified for the TV form factor. Users will receive the latest updates automatically.

Google says developers can start optimizing their websites for Google TV immediately and soon after launch, the company will release the Google TV SDK and web APIs for TV.

Not everyone is convinced Google TV will change the world – there’s some interesting commentary on Engadget from Engadget staff members.

Google TV devices will go on sale in fall 2010 and It looks as though the sets will only be available in the USA initially. You can get updates on Google TV availability here.

As for me, I’d just like a notebook with decent TV tuner integration, but only if the notebook while in TV mode consumed as much as my portable TV does – a measly 10 watts :). I’m just not a big screen/pay TV kind of guy.
