10 years of Taming the Beast

Posted by Michael Bloch in online world (Wednesday April 5, 2006 )

An Outlook calendar alert popped up a few minutes ago; simply stating “10 years of Taming the Beast!”.

Yes, as far as I can track back, it’s been a decade since I started business – first in mobile PC hardware services (even though I had no car at the time – a story in itself), then evolving into the online world. How time flies.

The site was originally established in 1997 and hosted on some free space courtesy of my ISP. It just provided my computer service clients with links to hardware drivers and other related resources.

After that, the site (still without its own domain name) became more of a hobby when I went on to do other things technology related. It then turned into an Internet training resource/testing platform when I was a Web project co-ordinator/developer (during which time I registered the name), then finally evolving into a full time business focusing more on Ecommerce and Web Marketing in 2001.

Ah, sweet memories of late nights, early mornings, overflowing ashtrays and a coffee mug that has been deemed to be a biological hazard . The sweetest memories are of dreams I knew were possible to achieve, holding tight to those dreams and then making them real.

I still remember back in the early years getting a few dozen visitors a day and being thrilled, and also the pride in receiving my first commission check for around $25 from Commission Junction in 2000.

Nowadays Taming the gets around 10,000 visitors a day, over 15,000 at times – and as for the commission checks; well, let’s just say they’ve grown a little too :).

Taming the has been more than a source of income for me. It’s tied in so closely with my personal life that it’s hard to remember what life was like without it or to contemplate what it would be like to be without it in the future – whether that’s a good thing or not remains to be seen :).

I’m often asked about how Taming the Beast started, what the inspiration for the name was and how the business evolved, so this weekend I’ll try to take some time to write a detailed article on the topic.

The article will in part be a “pathway to success” type blurb; but there will be some warts in there too; personal stuff – and that’s where part of the reason I chose “Taming the Beast” for the name comes in. I guess what I will try and convey in the article is that challenge, failure and adversity are the bedfellows of success – and that out of crisis some of the most positive things in your life can emerge.

Still curious? For those of you who are interested, check this post for the URL early next week.

I’d also like to take this opportunity to convey my sincere thanks to all of you; for your positive feedback and also for your criticism. It’s a bit of a cliche, but very true – without all of you, none of this would have been possible. I look forward to continuing the journey with you over the coming decade.
