Spam statistics & monitoring tools

Posted by Michael Bloch in online world (Monday March 27, 2006 )

Visited the Commtouch Spam Lab yet? It generates an amazing amount of information including the frequency of spam outbreaks, maps showing the origin of spam outbreaks in real time; including data on distribution scale and speed. Really clever stuff.

The two most interesting tools:

1. Spam statistics and graphs

2. Global spam outbreak monitor

According to a recent report from Commtouch, during the month of February, spam accounted for over 46% of all email to corporate users in over 130 countries.

For ordinary Joe Surfer, the stats are even worse. Commtouch estimates that over 71% of all email sent to the average consumer during the same period was spam - these figures are based on 5 million users sampled globally.

For February, the USA was stil the leading “source” of spam messages; (bearing in mind that sometimes USA computer users are hijacked by spam trojans operated from other countries), followed by; in descending order: China, Germany, Korea, France and the UK.
