Over 1 billion

Posted by Michael Bloch in online world (Tuesday February 17, 2009 )

A milestone was quietly passed in December 2008 – over one billion Internet users served during that month.

According to ComScore, the total global Internet audience age 15 and older from home and work computers exceeded 1 billion visitors in December, based on data from the comScore World Metrix audience measurement service.

The Asia-Pacific region has the highest share of global Internet users at 41%, then Europe with 28%, North America (18%), Latin-America (7%), and the Middle East & Africa (5%).

Given that Australia, part of the Asia Pacific region, only has a total population of only 21 million and New Zealand far less, this means there are a truckload of users who do not speak English or English is a second language for them. Then there’s all the different European languages to consider, languages of the Middle East as so on.

We all tend to focus on the US markets, but as I’ve said in the past, maybe it’s time to spread our wings a little. For starters, translating key pages into various languages. This isn’t just a nice service for ESL and non-English speaking visitors, but gives a merchant extra tickets in the search engine ranking lottery depending on how it’s done.
