Lulu now in Australia!

If you’re based in Australia, Southeast Asia or New Zealand and have considered self publishing, no doubt the cost made your head spin., an online self publishing service, announced late last week they have added a printer in Australia, which will cut costs dramatically. For us down under, often the shipping cost was close to the price of having the book printed.

I’m still in two minds about the whole book publishing scene. I’ve been approached twice this year by major publishing houses wanting me to crank out a book, but their contracts are frightening, the process is terribly complicated and the payments while writing the book are pretty slim. You have to wait at least a year after finishing before the royalties then start coming in.

But then again, I’m not exactly Stephen King.

It’s been interesting running through the negotiations to discover just how darned slow producing a mass-print paper based book is. While on the topic, if you ever get asked to write a book and it gets to contract stage, I thoroughly recommend you read this article on book contracts. It saved me getting thoroughly bogged down and tied to a publisher for eternity.

(added tip from me: the longer a contract is, any contract, the more likely it is that the other party is trying to screw you)

I think I’d choose the self-publishing route if I decided to put out a few books, but then again, for informational stuff rather than a curl-up-in-bed novel, ebooks are a better way to go as the margins are far better, there’s great ebook generator software available at a very low cost, no middlemen, no huge overheads and therefore you can offer quite competitive pricing.
