Kindle is carving it up

Posted by Michael Bloch in online world (Sunday August 1, 2010 )

If you visited Amazon’s press release page at the moment, you could be forgiven in thinking you had hit the Kindle-specific press release page as the device is mentioned so often. Ebooks are turning into very big business for Amazon and others.

According to Amazon, the Kindle has been their best selling item two years running and sales have accelerated each month in the second quarter.

Jeff Bezos, Founder and CEO of Amazon.com, says sales reached a tipping point when they lowered the price of the unit from $259 to $189.

The U.S. Kindle Store now has more than 630,000 books and over 1.8 million free, out-of-copyright books are also available to read on Kindle.

Over the past three months, for every 100 hardcover books Amazon.com has sold, it has sold 143 Kindle books – this even includes sales of hardcover books where there is no Kindle edition. Amazon has sold more than triple the amount of Kindle books in the first half of 2010 as in the first half of 2009.

The press release from Amazon quotes statistics from Association of American Publishers showing e-book sales grew 163 percent in the month of May and 207 percent year-to-date through May.

A couple of lucky authors have already joined the 1 million club and five authors have each sold more than 500,000 Kindle books.

More than 235,000 books have been added to the Kindle Store in just the last six months. Amazon says the new Kindle has double the storage – capacity to carry up to 3,500 books. The new device has a 21 percent smaller body and at only 8.7 ounces, is 15 percent lighter.
