Digg for Google?

Posted by Michael Bloch in online world (Friday November 21, 2008 )

I was logged into my Google account this afternoon and after running a search noticed a few icons next to all the results representing interesting new(?) features; one a “Digg” type voting function.

For starters, accompanying all the listings were “promote” and “remove” buttons as displayed below (click for larger view)

google promote

I haven’t been able to find out too much about the promote/remove deal and what it actually does, but some black hat SEO sites are already buzzing about the possibility of exploiting the feature with malware.

Another feature is the “comment” icon next to the similar pages link that accompanies each listing (click for larger view):

After clicking “yes, continue”, this is the result (click for larger view – yellow highlighting mine):

google comment added

Curious stuff. Google’s results have become a little cluttered of late in my opinion, sometimes a single SERPs page will have video, news, blog and images entries along with the usual results – now this.

Has anyone seen any official word from Google on the promote/remove and commenting features? If so, I’d appreciate you pointing me to their post about about it :).

I’d also be interested to know if this is a general rollout – the few entries I could find about it seemed to point to it being a test feature with some folks seeing it and some not. Remember, you’ll need to be logged in to your Google account to see the promote, remove and comment icons in the SERPs.

*** Update **** – here’s Google’s announcement on the set of features, called SearchWiki.
