Domain registration statistics

Posted by Michael Bloch in online world (Sunday June 22, 2008 )

According to a recent Verisign report, over 162 million Top Level Domain Names (TLDs) have been registered this year up until the end of the first quarter of 2008.

This represents growth of 26% percent year over year and 6% growth as a quarterly comparison.

The .com extension is still the most popular, followed by the ccTLD’s (Country Code Top Level Domain) .de (Germany), .cn (China), .net, .uk (United Kingdom) and then .org. By the end of first quarter, .com and .net domain names accounted for
84.4 million domain name registrations.

The German ccTLD (.de) remains the largest ccTLD in terms of domain name registrations, which is pretty remarkable given the population of the country; however, .cn grew 23 percent during the quarter and .cn’s phenomenal annual growth at 199 percent should see it be the number one ccTLD soon.

In terms of renewals, during the fourth quarter of 2007, renewal rate for .com and .net was 74 percent which is within a normal range compared to the last few years.

India appears to be another vast untapped market – while it has over 41 million Internet users and is the eighth largest Internet population in the world, the number of users represents only about four percent of the Indian population; but adoption is speeding up, growing 25 percent during 2007. Around 82 percent of businesses in India without a domain name expressed interest in registering a name.

The Verisign June Domain Name Industry Brief states the company processed peak loads of more than 50 billion Domain Name System (DNS) queries a day during the first quarter of 2008.
