Broadband connection statistics

Posted by Michael Bloch in online world (Tuesday May 22, 2007 )

These broadband statistics are a little old I guess, but interesting nonetheless. According to a recent report, the total number of broadband connections globally reached over a quarter of a billion by the end of 2006.

The 21 page report from Point Topic released in late March also reveals nearly 18 million connections were added in the final quarter of 2006, representing 6.7% quarterly growth and the years growth was 31.1% over 2001.

In relation to population penetration rate, the number of broadband connections per 100 people reached 5.4 by the end of 2006. While that figure is steadily increasing, growth rates have slowed somewhat since 2004.

Some other key findings from the study:

Number of broadband users

USA – 57.3 million
China – 51.9 million
Japan – 26 million
Germany
South Korea
France
UK
Italy
Canada
Spain

The gap between the USA and China closed by nearly half a million over the previous year. The report points out China’s second phase of the “Cun Cun Tong” initiative (“Connect all villages with Internet”) is about to commence and it’s likely a done deal that China will be catching up with the USA shortly.

In terms of most broadband subscribers added (descending order):

China
USA
France
Germany
Japan
UK
Spain
Brazil
Italy
Turkey

The total of new broadband connections in China for Q4 2006 3.2 million. Next in line, the USA added 2.8 million lines over the quarter – this rate has remained constant, between around 2.7 to 2.9 million per quarter since Q3 2005.

Top 10 countries in terms of population broadband penetration, descending order

Denmark – 32.04%
Iceland
Netherlands
South Korea
Switzerland
Finland
Norway
Hong Kong
Sweden
Canada

Lots of growth, but still much of the world without access to broadband or on dialup – be kind to them; keep dialup users in mind when developing web sites – they buy stuff online too :). I hear an increasing number of them are running to their windows yelling “I’m as mad as hell and I’m not gonna take it any more!” (From the movie Network starring Peter Finch circa 1976).
