55% of blogs are active

Posted by Michael Bloch in online world (Tuesday November 7, 2006 )

According to Dave Sifry’s most recent State of the Blogosphere report, over half of all blogs tracked by Technorati are classified as active, i.e. they’ve been updated at least on one occasion in the last 3 months. There’s also a wealth of other interesting blog statistics in Dave’s report as always.

Currently, Technorati is tracking over 57 million blogs and while blogosphere growth rate has slowed somewhat, that certainly doesn’t mean to say that blogging is dropping off generally; in fact “real” blogging is probably becoming more active as services such as Technorati become more adept at differentiating between blogs and splogs (spam blogs)

Other interesting highlights from the State of the Blogosphere:

– The current doubling rate of the blogospher is approximately 236 days

– As at October 2006, around 100,000 new weblogs were created every day

– 1.3 million blog postings are made per day

– English and Japanese are the two most popular blogging language, followed by Chinese.

Technorati states that around 4% of new splogs manage to get by their filters; not a bad result at all considering how many of the damned things are cranked out these days.

Dave’s report also shows a correlation between blog authority, age and posting frequency

Low Authority

This consists of blogs with only 3 to 9 other blogs linking in the last 6 months. The average age of these blogs is around 228 days and only averaging about 12 posts a month.

Middle Authority

With 10-99 other blogs linking to blogs in this group over the last 6 months, the average age is 260 days and have around 18 posts made per month.

High Authority

Average age of 455 days, 25 posts made a month and have 100-499 other blogs linking to them.

Very high authority

Average age of 530 days, 53 postings a month and over 500 other blogs linking back.
