Asia Pacific Internet audience growth

comScore, Inc. released a survey report a few hours ago on the growth of Internet audiences in the Asia-Pacific region

The survey found that the Asia-Pacific region has seen significant growth in the past year, increasing 22 percent to nearly half a billion active users, with most individual countries in the region experiencing double-digit growth rates.

In September 2009, the Internet population in the Asia-Pacific region reached 484 million home and work visitors age 15+.

The region now accounts for 41 percent of the total 1.2 billion person global Internet audience.

China is the fastest-growing Internet country in the region and experienced a 31-percent increase to 220.8 million over the past 12 months. China’s online population exceeds that of the USA and has for quite a while.

Japan’s online population surged 18 percent to 68.3 million and India climbed 17 percent to 35.8 million users.

Many Western merchants disregard India as a potential market, considering it to be a “poor” country; but given increasing affluence and an online population larger than the entire population of Australia, this view should perhaps be reconsidered.

Speaking of Australia, it experienced double digit growth of 12% over the last 12 months. The nation’s Internet audience grew from just over 11.36 million in 2008 to in excess of 12.74 million this year. With a population of 23 million overall, including all age groups, the nation is headed for maturity in terms of Internet adoption, so the years of double-digit growth may be coming to an end soon.
