Al Gore – Internet Hall Of Fame

Posted by Michael Bloch in online world (Friday April 27, 2012 )

Al Gore was among the inaugural Internet Hall of Fame inductees announced recently at the Internet Society’s Global INET 2012 conference in Geneva, Switzerland.

It’s a running joke that Al Gore believes he invented the Internet. This originated from a misinterpretation of something he said in an interview in 1999:

“During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet.”

What actually occurred is as far back as the 1970s when Gore was a Congressman; he recognized the potential of high speed and computer communications. According to Wikipedia, he provided “intellectual leadership by helping create the vision of the potential benefits”.

Even the recognized “father of the Internet,” Vint Cerf, said of Gore: “He is indeed due some thanks and consideration for his early contributions”.

And while on the topic of Vint, he was also inducted into the Internet Hall Of Fame this week; along with the inventor of the World Wide Web, Tim Berners-Lee – along with a number of others.

Getting down to the nitty-gritty; the Internet precedes Al by a wide margin. In 1958, The U.S. Department of Defense launched the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA); which developed a rudimentary Internet in the 1960’s.

Anyway, whoever did what and when may always be a topic for debate. But for all those involved, lauded or not; they have a lot to be proud of.

I remember how excited I was the first time I logged onto the web. I can only imagine how much of a buzz it was for those responsible for creating the infrastructure; the people who dared to dream of what we have today. The Internet/World Wide Web is still a baby and the mind boggles at the prospect of how things might look in a couple of decades from now.

The Internet Society has also launched a web site showcasing the inductees and their contributions.
