Icy weather boosts online holiday shopping

Posted by Michael Bloch in ecommerce (Wednesday December 24, 2008 )

The recent wintry weekend in the USA has boosted online holiday shopping sales to twice what they were the same weekend last year.

According to ComScore, a mix of fewer shopping days than last holiday season and severe cold and snowstorms affecting much of the northern half of the country has contributed to the surge.

Overall though, online shopping this holiday season has been like the USA’s weather; a little bleak.

From the start to the heaviest time of the online shopping season saw sales of $9 billion, an increase of 2 percent over year ago. But then the wheels started to fall off as consumers reigned in spending – the week ending December 14 saw e-commerce sales decline 2 percent.

For the holiday season through December 21, $24.71 billion has been spent online, which is down 1 percent compared to corresponding shopping days last year.

Still, things could be far worse given economic conditions and I think pure play ecommerce merchants might be thanking their lucky stars that they don’t have the added overheads of bricks and mortar stores.

… and there’s always the end of year sales yet to come! Let’s face it, modern business is just one big sale :).

Whatever you are doing tomorrow, I wish you a safe, sane and peaceful day :).
