Retail ecommerce grows 23 percent

Posted by Michael Bloch in ecommerce (Saturday October 27, 2007 )

U.S. ecommerce spend statistics for the third quarter of 2007 show retail ecommerce increased 23 percent over a year ago to a total of $28.4 billion.

The report from comScore, Inc presents some amazing figures for the Video Games, Consoles & Accessories category – growth of 199%. Other categories rating 50%+ over last years results were Consumer Electronics (excl. PC Peripherals), Toys & Hobbies and event tickets.

comScore believes that some of the incredible growth in the toys category make have been sparked by the many recalls in recent times. It’s an ill wind that blows nobody any good I guess.

Even online travel, which is a really well established market, continued to produce double-digit gains – so it seems that retail ecommerce is far from maturing. Seeing figures like these consistently for years makes me wonder what will happen once things do level out and start to match offline retail growth – there will be people yelling that the sky is falling and jumping out windows :). Huge growth is a wonderful thing, but quite addictive and becomes expected after a while.
