Online spending – a rosy outlook

Performics’ recent “2009 Online Buyer Economic Trend Study” survey report shows many consumers aren’t reining in their online spending during the recession – in fact, some will increase it.

The survey of 300 consumers who have made an online purchase in the last 6 months found 60 percent of respondents say they will spend the same or more money online in the next 60 days than they did at this time last year.

Other key findings:

– Close to 70 percent of respondents used coupons.

– Over a third say they are more likely to click on banner ads or PPC listings while online shopping.

– 85% believe the the recession will have a lasting impact on saving and spending habits.

– Over a third of those receiving a tax refund will be using it to pay off debt.

The statistic for coupons is very interesting. As mentioned in the past, the coupon user of today isn’t just those people who are strapped for cash – everyone loves a bargain, particularly in these times. Regarding people spending more online in the time ahead, I think that’s because more people are finding that online shopping isn’t just convenient, but the best deals often aren’t found in bricks and mortar stores, rather on the web.
