Nearly 80% shop online

According to Nielsen Online, 79% of US consumers have made an online purchase in the last 6 months.

I went digging back on Taming the for reports from older studies just to see what sorts of increases have occurred.

The closest set of stats I could find easily were from 2005, where 37% said they intended to shop for *holiday gifts* online that year – a time when it’s most likely people will purchase online. It’s quite an increase.

So, what have are people buying? According to Nielsen Online, the popular items/services are:

Online Travel – Any 38% 54,417
Clothes/Shoes/Acc. – Any 28% 40,075
Books – 26%
Hotel/Motel Reservations 18%
Auctions – 16%
Event Tickets – 14%
Insurance – 11%
Computer Software – 11%

While the economy may be in bad shape, the sheer numbers of people joining the ranks of online shoppers helps to soften the Wall Street blows a little – in my opinion, now more than ever it’s preferable to be in online business over having a bricks and mortar store.

But just because people are out and about buying from the web, it doesn’t mean it’s like shooting fish in a barrel – it’s quite the opposite. Consumers are (thankfully) becoming increasingly savvy when it comes to online purchases – it doesn’t take much to scare them off your site and send them packing to your competitors. And with so many competitors now out here, how do you differentiate your store among all others?
