Double digit ecommerce growth for 2011

Posted by Michael Bloch in ecommerce (Saturday February 5, 2011 )

Online retail eclipsed $43 billion for the final quarter last year, up 11 percent over Q4 2009.

The record $43.4 billion was the fifth consecutive quarter of increases in year-over-year growth and was the second quarter of growth rates in double digits for the past twelve months says comScore.

comScore chairman Gian Fulgoni said the 2010 holiday season saw the first billion-dollar day ever and there were other days that shot past the $900 million spend mark.

Mr. Fulgoni says indications point to continued double-digit growth rates in 2011.

The top performing product categories for online sales in the final quarter of last year included computer software (excluding games), consumer electronics, books and magazines and toys and hobbies, all growing at least 15%.

The big guys of online retailing are increasingly making their presence felt, accounting for 68.4 percent of dollars spent online during Q4 2010, up 5.6 percent on the prior year.

The incidence of online shopping is continuing to rise with 84 percent of U.S. Internet users having made an online transaction during Q4 2010, compared to 78 percent during the same time frame last year. While more are buying, they aren’t necessarily buying more – comScore says the average online shopper spent around the same amount as they did during the same period a year ago.

Looking back to earlier on in the quarter, in October, visits to the overall retail category grew 15% year over year in 2010 and going back even further, total e-commerce sales through Q3 2010 were up 8% versus Q3 2009.
