eBay launches MyWorld

Like blogging services before them, new social networking services are being launched left, right and center; covering all sorts of niches. Some say only the biggest will survive, but I really think it will be like forums - there’s room for many.

I feel that eBay’s definitely on the right track with their new social networking type service, MyWorld.

Preventing directory browsing

Take a run out to your site and enter yoursite.com/images/ - just the name of your images folder, nothing else afterwards except for the trailing /.

If you see a “forbidden” or 403 error message, that’s normal, but if you see a list of files, it means that your server is configured to allow for directory browsing. You’ll notice that any folder that doesn’t have a default document in place will also behave in the same way.

Anonymous, portable browser

Torpark, from Hactivismo, is a new portable browser claimed to keep a surfer’s identity private. Based on Mozilla Firefox, it comes as a pre-configured application and requires no installation. It’s small enough (around 28 megabytes) to fit and run on a USB stick.

Email marketing subject lines

Strategies are always changing in the world of marketing; like an old t-shirt, some methods become more transparent as time goes on and can become repugnant to some consumers. I use the clothing analogy as I’m well known for hanging onto t-shirts for a decade - they do literally become quite transparent and yes, my family does find them rather repugnant :)
