Click fraud costing $1 billion p.a.

Posted by Michael Bloch in web marketing (Tuesday February 28, 2006 )

According to information in a recent article on Business Week, click fraud could account for up to 20% of all PPC traffic and be costing advertisers up to $1 billion per year.

What the real figures are is anyone’s guess, but if you’re investing in Pay Per Click, it’s wise to be aware

Auction feedback - be wary

Posted by Michael Bloch in ecommerce (Monday February 27, 2006 )

eBay and similar auction sites have created fortunes for some and a few extra bucks for many others. On the flip side, they’ve allowed millions people to purchase goods online at very competitive prices; everything from common items to missile silos (I kid you not).

I recently needed to buy some office dividers so I thought I’d check out eBay. I wasn’t really expecting to find anything, but lo and behold

Spyware - nasty stuff

Posted by Michael Bloch in online world (Saturday February 25, 2006 )

A recent incident a colleauge experienced related to spyware was the spur for my latest article; Spyware - definition, statistics, prevention and removal.

When we think of spyware, most often what comes to mind are deviate programmers wanting to take control of our computers - but the term really covers a wide range of applications from the slightly annoying, to mildly intrusive to downright satanic.

Email, ecommerce & the workplace

Posted by Michael Bloch in ecommerce (Friday February 24, 2006 )

I was just perusing an article on Internet Retailer about the importance of effective email practices in customer service and ecommerce. Sounds like a bit of a no-brainer topic, but the article made a very good point to underline how critical a rapid email response time is.

22% of households still on dialup

Posted by Michael Bloch in web development (Friday February 24, 2006 )

A recent survey by Parkes Associates shows that approximately 22% of U.S. households are still connected to the Internet via dialup services. With only 4% of households planning to upgrade to broadband this year, that still leaves an appreciable chunk of users accessing the web through narrowband.

Blogging, bodies & bucks

Posted by Michael Bloch in ecommerce (Wednesday February 22, 2006 )

I’m a relative newcomer to formal blogging; although my quasi-blog had been active for a few years. I wish I had moved to the “real deal” format earlier, but eh, (insert variety of excuses here) :). Still, I’ve been pleased to see the number of people visiting the new blog and I encourage your comments - constructive feedback, opinions on pieces I write about or added info on any item is most welcome!

Much like the dawning of the realization that there were bucks to be made

FrontPage Includes for fun & profit

Posted by Michael Bloch in web development (Tuesday February 21, 2006 )

I’m a FrontPage fan, unashamedly so. I feel that FrontPage is often rubbished simply because it’s a Microsoft product. I’ve heard the arguments about added server overhead and crappy code, but really, any extra load on the servers of today is minimal and later versions of FrontPage can produce quite clean code.

I’m still using FrontPage 2000 - why? because it does everything I need it to :). Don’t let anyone tell you that FrontPage is useless when it comes to sites that are over a few dozen pages

del.icio.us bookmarking script

Posted by Michael Bloch in web marketing (Sunday February 19, 2006 )

del.icio.us is a free online service for storing your bookmarks and favorites. It also allows you to share your favorites with friends and colleagues, or the entire del.icio.us community - and this is where it’s real power and benefit lies.

If you’re away from your computer, it’s a great way to access your favorites, but users can also take advantage of the research that other del.icio.us members have carried out by searching the massive database.

China’s online censorship

Posted by Michael Bloch in online world (Saturday February 18, 2006 )

*Sigh* - why must the West push its own “values” onto other countries that aren’t yet, and perhaps may never be, ready to accept them.

I’m referring to the issue regarding the major search engines making forays into the Chinese market. Many of us in the West seem to be kicking up a major stink in regards to China forcing these companies to filter out content that they find unsuitable. China should be applauded and encouraged for the concessions they have allowed, not demonized.
