Articles - Vox Publicus
If you run a small web site, you may feel relatively powerless in regards to your affiliation status with the multi-nationals. There are many tens of thousands of us now, and with a united voice we can make a difference.
In one of my recent articles, I reported that Alta Vista had dropped it's "Standard Affiliate" program.
The losers were the thousands of affiliates who had not clocked up over the US$20 mark - this translates into over 1999 click throughs. While the company was well within it's rights to take this course of action, the amount of notice given by the company was a matter of hours before the program was dropped.
I also stated that while this course of action would save Alta Vista a great deal of money, it may also have repercussions for the company that they didn't expect. My articles were published at a variety of sites and it is my understanding that many web masters contacted the company with well formulated, constructive feedback. I am sure many other web masters published articles on the subject as well.
This morning I received an email from Alta Vista:
"Thank you for your feedback regarding our restructuring of the Standard Affiliate Program. Our organization has decided to issue compensation checks to all affiliates who have earned commission regardless of amount. We appreciate your efforts to promote AltaVista and wish to extend our gratitude for your participation and support"
It was heartening to see that this company not only listened but acted on the feedback they received. While on an individual basis, the dollar figure payout is low - that wasn't the point.
If you feel that any of your partners, content suppliers etc. have done the wrong thing by you, don't feel that there is nothing that you can do. Speak your mind, speak it well and you may be surprised by the results.
I hope that other companies will take Alta Vista's lead and consider the "little guy", because we are many and a vital part of the Internet community. We are also consumers.
